70% of your carts are abandoned: how much you can recover (and how)
For every ten people who add a product to your cart, seven leave without buying. The average abandonment rate sits around 70%, and in Spain it's usually above 75%. That's not a detail: it's most of the purchase intent you already paid to create —through ads, content and SEO— evaporating at the very last step.
It isn't a traffic problem
The temptation is to spend more on attracting visits. But if seven of every ten carts drop, you're filling a leaky bucket: each new euro of traffic inherits the same leak. The cheap move isn't bringing more people — it's recovering the ones who were already one click from buying.
How much actually comes back
The good news is that a share of those carts can be rescued systematically. With a well-built automated sequence, the sector recovers, on average, around 10–30% of abandoned carts, depending on the channel:
- Email: stores running recovery emails rescue, on average, between 3% and 14% of lost sales.
- WhatsApp and messaging: used well, they lift recovery notably because they're almost always read.
- Multichannel: combining both, with the right message at the right moment, is what moves the number up.
The sequence that works
You don't need to reinvent anything. Three touches are usually the sweet spot:
- Within the hour: a neutral reminder, no pressure. Many abandonments are simple distractions.
- At 12–24 h: resolve the real doubt (shipping, returns, social proof) that stalled the purchase.
- At 24–48 h: if needed, an incentive — and only if needed, so you don't train customers to wait for discounts.
Why generic apps fall short
Almost every platform ships a basic cart email, and it's fine to start with. The problem is that it's generic: it doesn't know your stock, doesn't segment by cart value or by new-vs-returning customer, and doesn't combine email with WhatsApp. That's where most of the recoverable money stays on the table.
How we close it
As a recurring tech partner we connect your store, your messaging and your warehouse so the sequence fires with your logic —not a generic app's— and we tune it with your data every month. That's the difference between "having a cart email" and systematically recovering what slips away today.
